Discussions are ongoing about the dangers faced by the 1,200 Italian soldiers involved in the United Nations peacekeeping contingent. Of these, approximately 1,100 are engaged in the UNIFIL mission, which primarily aims to ensure compliance with the Blue Line and maintain peace and security. The remaining 100 are involved in the MIBIL mission, which focuses on training Lebanese security forces.

Rising Tensions Between Israel and Iran

The tension between Israel and Iran is escalating. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has called for Italians to leave Lebanon, anticipating a strong response from Iran following an Israeli attack that resulted in the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Tehran has vowed to "punish" Tel Aviv, although it has clarified that it does not seek to escalate tensions in the region.

Investments in Peace

The situation in Lebanon is extremely tense. The Italian government has urged the approximately 3,000 civilians present in the country to return home as soon as possible and has advised tourists to cancel their travel plans. The Italian Foreign Minister has requested that Italians leave the country via commercial flights, but if airports become congested, two military ships are already stationed off the coast of Lebanon.

Evacuation Plans

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has urged Italians to leave Lebanon as soon as possible. Following the lead of other Western capitals, Rome has alerted its citizens in a country that risks becoming the center of an unpredictable military escalation, against the backdrop of growing tensions between Iran and Israel. The evacuation plans have been updated, with three naval ships available for repatriation.
