Growth in the Online Bingo Market
The bingo industry took a slight knock at the start of this decade which resulted in an overall decrease in turnover between April 2010-March 2011 and April 2011-March 2012, figures for the period October 2011-September 2012 highlight an increase in turnover against each bingo game with the overall turnover figure increasing by almost £37m, rising from £1,239.47m to £1,276.07m. The gross gaming yield (GGY) figures for each bingo game have increased during the latest period. The overall GGY for bingo has risen from £412.26m in the period April 2011-March 2012 to £429.01m in the period October 2011-September 2012.
Outside of online bingo and traditional bingo clubs, mechanised bingo in bars and clubs has contributed in a big way to the spread of bingo as a past time. Initial contact with bingo for many, now regular, bingo player's first starting playing bingo regularly with these machines. GGY overall has increased by £89.06m since April 2009-March 2010. Of that, £77.95m was generated through machines play and £11.11m generated through bingo games. Between April 2009-March 2010 bingo game revenue accounted for 67% of total revenue. Between October 2011-September 2012 bingo game revenue accounted for 60% of total revenue.
Mechanised bingo has been on the slide somewhat since the widespread adoption of online bingo and in particular mobile bingo and the adoption of tablets by many of the target demographic of most bingo providers. This is largely due to how easy it is for bingo to be played almost passively as people look to relax and dual screen with the television on and play bingo on their laptop or tablet. Also the social aspect of playing bingo in a club has been replaced by the chat rooms and forums that accompany many bingo sites.
These changes and the historic trends mean that although the growth of the bingo industry has slowed it is still, and this is key, growing and will continue to do so as people adopt mobile technology and the target demographic adapts to the dual screen experience.
