Punters Vote in Favour of Remain

The bookmaker have seen some sizeable bets including three wagers of £10,000 to remain in the EU, with the bookie now forecasting that industry wide turnover will top £30 million by the time the result is declared on Friday morning.

The David Cameron-led  campaign to stay is strengthening with the Betfred odds to remain 1/4  with Britain 3/1 to leave. This means that the bookmaker is predicting that Britain has a 75% chance of voting to stay in the EU.

However although the remain campaign is odds on, punters do believe it will be close with under 55% to vote remain the most popular at 8/11.

Last week the leave campaign was at its strongest with the Betfred odds closest at 8/13 to remain and 6/5 to leave - but at the beginning of the week the remain campaign has rallied significantly with worries over the economy their trump card against fears over migration which is the number one issue for  those who want to quit the EU.

Last year's general election with the prospect of a hung parliament led to £1m being bet on the outcome - and as polls closed Betfred paid out early on the Tories winning the most seats.

That followed the Scottish referendum where there was a much higher than expected turnout.

Betfred spokesman Peter Spencer said: "We fully expect the EU referendum to reach record levels for  betting on politics. We are already through the £1 million mark and with the public vote upon us we will at least double that figure by the time the result is declared around breakfast time on Friday. There  have been some substantial  bets on each side of the debate, but particularly for Britain to remain. Regular punters interested in the Euro2016 football, horse or dog racing are having a flutter  on this huge political issue that affects everyone of us. Forget the ballot box, punters have been voting with their dough."
