Northwest Ohio operator embraces Active Ethernet for high speed business connections

 

Oakland, CA - June 5, 2012 - Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE), a global pioneer in FTTx network access solutions, today announced a new MXK(TM) deployment with QualStar Communications, Inc., a sister company  to MetaLINK Technologies, Inc., an internet service provider in Defiance, OH. The new FTTx deployment will support delivery of more affordable and reliable high-speed Internet access, VoIP and eventually video services to MetaLINK's subscriber base.

 

MetaLINK needed a full range of delivery mediums that can be deployed side-by-side, a feature found in Zhone's MXK(TM), designed to limit the cost of network upgrades and ongoing broadband deployments. The unmatched flexibility and scalability of the Zhone MXK(TM) platform and its ability to provide Active Ethernet (AE) in facilitating network and service upgrades to FTTH has been demonstrated in similar domestic broadband projects. This helps future-proof the network for more advanced service rollouts. It also reduces recurring operating expenses (OPEX) and any adverse customer impact from rollout and provisioning of next-generation services.

To date, Zhone has deployed more than 3,000 of its fully redundant, carrier-grade all-IP MXK platforms with more than 150 service providers globally, signaling an FTTx customer growth rate of more than 450 percent in the three-year period from January 2009 to January 2012. Total subscriber capacity supported by these deployments now exceeds 20 million. Featuring industry-leading density, scalability and switching capacity, the MXK is the industry's first terabit access concentrator and provides non-blocking capacity of up to 3,600 100 Mbps GPON subscribers or 360 1G Active Ethernet subscribers. Zhone has also driven more than 8,500 percent ONT growth and more than 9,800 percent OLT growth since solution inception.
