The NHS initiative was introduced in 2012 following statistics which revealed the percentage of smokers not wishing to stop smoking had increased during 2008-2011, from 15 per cent to 21.85 per cent. Smoking is the biggest cause of premature death in England and each year it accounts for over 100,000 deaths in the UK and 1 in 2 long-term smokers will die prematurely from a smoking related disease.
