Think Bus: cost effective for society, attractive for customers!

Brussels, 23 April 2012

The 7th International Bus Conference, organised in Istanbul by the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) and hosted by TOHOB (Turkish Private Urban Bus Operators' Association) and IETT (General Directorate for Istanbul Buses), entitled 'Think Bus: cost effective for society, attractive for customers', reinforced the key role bus systems can play in the mobility chain as well as their assets in terms of economic performance, innovation and customer service quality. The Conference featured a panel of more than 40 speakers, including the Turkish Minister for EU Affairs Egemen Bagis, and brought together 366 delegates from 51 countries.

In order to achieve the objective set out in UITP's PTx2 strategy, aiming at doubling the market share of public transport worldwide by 2025, cities will absolutely have to count on bus systems, as they still remain the main carriers in public transport (accounting on average for 80% of all public transport trips) and often represent the backbone of transport systems. Focusing on affordability and cost effectiveness, the Bus Conference demonstrated how crucial it is for the bus industry to combine cost-efficient solutions and an attractive offer in order to remain competitive.

Achieving this double requirement of cost efficiency and service quality for customers will need a combination of factors. Bus systems will have to go on innovating, by developing alternative energy, such as hybrid, and by deploying IT solutions in the fields of customer information and ticketing. In addition, they will need to make appropriate use of technology, which is indispensable to enhancing their performance. Furthermore, the Conference sessions also highlighted the importance of fully integrating buses in cities, which can be facilitated by easy-access interchange hubs. The new EBSF bus stop with multimodal and business interfaces is another way to achieve this integration.

"I am convinced this Conference has contributed to paving the way for new developments on the basis of a good relationship between all stakeholders: authorities, operators, manufacturers and civic associations," stated Thierry Wagenknecht, Chairman of the UITP Bus Committee.

The Conference was concluded with the signing of the Istanbul Bus Declaration, a commitment from the bus sector to provide a high-quality service and a message to authorities, operators and decision-makers to ensure the best conditions are in place for this commitment to be achieved.
