"We aim to produce the highest-quality video journalism for audiences around the world," said Ma Jing, CGTN America's Director General. "These results demonstrate that commitment. We couldn't be prouder of our videographers, video editors and digital producers."
CGTN America Chief Photographer, Andrew Smith, earned one of the competitions' two top honors—Video Editor of the Year. Judges praised Smith's editing for a sports story he shot in Jackson Hole, but also paid tribute to his skill on a wide range of assignments. "We voted unanimously for Andrew Smith," said Judge Katie Barry. "From the ear to the eye, all senses were flawlessly covered. As a viewer, you felt like you were in the Mississippi grocery store gabbing with the Chinese man with a southern accent or in the white water-rafting boat in Wyoming."
In photography Smith also won first place in News Special Reports/Series for "Reports from China." Other CGTN America first place winners include videographer/editors Peter Stolz, Duane Watkins and Kuba Wuls. Dan Criswell won second place for his Political/Campaign photography. Kamran Taherimoghaddam won second place in Magazine Editing. Lisa Chiu won third place in Multimedia for her stop-motion video, "Marking time's passage in a Chinese street."
The network also won five second place awards, eight third place awards and four awards of excellence.
