The Sydney bells kicked off events taking place at numerous iconic destinations around the globe, including Mexico City , Warsaw Municipal Park and the United Nations Peace Bell rung at the UN Headquarters in New York City .

Sally Pearson said, "Creating world peace is a central ideal for all Olympians. I'm proud on top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, taking in one on of the world's most inspiring views and ringing a bell for peace alongside UN International Day of Peace representatives."

UN International Day of Peace, more popularly known as UN Peace Day or World Peace Day, encourages people, communities and governments to embrace tolerance and diversity in the face of current social strains.

On this day all Australians are asked to talk with one another to reflect and acknowledge the impact of war and violence on innocent children and wider humankind.

A minute's silence at noon local time may be observed, to the backdrop of the chimes.

This year, 2014, is particularly relevant as it marks the centenary of the beginning of WWI, the war that was hoped would end all wars.

The event calls for 24-hours of global ceasefire and non-violence in all combat zones on the day to allow humanitarian aid access and the evacuation of civilians.
