European Parliament - The backbone of the European economy: support SMEs, says the Parliament
Helping small and medium enterprises (SMEs) develop efficient internationalization strategies that would allow them to seize opportunities on the global market - this is what Austrian MEP Paul Rübig (EPP) expects from the EU legislation in the area. Numbering 23 million, the SMEs form a backbone of the European economy, Mr Rübig points out.
SMEs represent 99% of businesses and account for 58% of total turnover in the EU. Their development and growth is therefore essential for enhancing Europe's competitiveness and strengthening its attractiveness as a place for investment and production, says Mr Rübig who is the author of the Parliament's report on SMEs competitiveness and business opportunities.
The report proposes to launch a multilingual online portal which would provide information about priority markets for SMEs. It underlines the importance of the Erasmus for young entrepreneurs programme which allows young businessmen to exchange best practices also with centres of excellence outside the EU.
The report was already adopted in the committee and will be soon debated in plenary.
