On September 16, many citizens took part in the plethora of performances, parades, rodeos, and feasts that took place all over the country. On September 15, the night before "El Grito," Mexico City is decorated with red, white, and green ornaments and a huge feast is held. When the clock strikes eleven, everyone is silent. On the last strike of the clock on the eleventh hour, the president of Mexico emerges on the presidential palace balcony and rings the historic liberty bell and shouts the "Grito de Dolores." At the end of this ceremony, the entire crowd chants, "¡Viva México!" It is a truly moving and exciting experience to be a part of. This year due to certain circumstances the president was not able to partake but the fiesta was still held.
Mexican Independence Day is celebrated around the country, and politicians and mayors repeat this ritual across Mexico. Food is a very important part of Mexican culture, and the month of September is also known as the "Mes de la Patria," or heritage month. During September, visitors to Mexico can enjoy many traditional Mexican dishes including Mole Poblano, Chiles en Nogada and so many more.
