New and improved grid-scale energy storage technologies are gaining popularity. Pumped hydro storage is efficient, but installations are expensive and time-consuming to build. Lithium-ion batteries are common in small applications, but building large-scale lithium-ions remains prohibitively expensive. Ultracapacitors and flow batteries have their niche uses. And some cutting-edge solutions aggregate many small amounts of storage, whether from electric vehicle batteries, uninterruptible power supplies, or the thermal storage embodied in water heaters.

SMi's Grid-Scale Energy Storage conference 25-26 June 2012, London provides distilled international perspectives on this exciting field.  Our line-up of international experts features a hands-on, case study-driven approach from those at the sharp end of maintaining and sustaining energy provision needs.  From integrating and , to harnessing , and utilising to aid your business, gain the insights you need to remain competitive.

Join us for two days of , informed discussion and analysis.

Electricity is a use it or lose it product with no shelf life. Oil, gas, coal, wood, water in a reservoir, uranium etc. all can be held back and used as needed without losing much if any of their original potential. Try that trick with an electric current. Capacitors, of course, as their name implies, store electric charge, but what we generally are thinking of when we think of electricity is electric current itself.

Because of this, grid operators must continually dispatch generating capacity to keep the network's supply and demand in balance at all times and to maintain the grid voltage and (AC) line frequency within very tight operational tolerances. Maintaining a very close balance between supply and demand is important not just because electric current needs to be consumed - for practical purposes pretty much right away, but also in order to maintain network power quality and reliability, both in terms of voltage and AC frequency.
