Females prioritize work/life balance over security or stability in their jobs

"To have work/life balance" and "To be secure or stable in my job" are equally important career goals to university students in Japan but there is a distinction between the preferences of males and female. Unlike their female counterparts, the male cohort emphasizes more on security or stability.

Jessica Hedlund, VP of North Asia at Universum says, "Japanese employers - especially privately-owned national companies - have always been preferred over international ones. However, when we understand the difference in career goals between male and female talents, we also notice that a bigger proportion of females (21%) want to 'work for an international company/organization' than males (15%).

Management consulting and Engineering and Manufacturing are the most preferred industries

Business students choose management and strategy consulting, followed by banks, as their preferred industries to work in after graduation. All of the global management consulting firms featured in the study have climbed several positions on the ranking. Students in engineering/natural sciences prefer to work in the engineering and manufacturing sector, followed by the chemical industry.

Few international companies on top 20 but all making significant progress

The only international companies that make the top 20 of the rankings are Apple, Google and Goldman Sachs, which have made significant progress in their popularity among Japanese students. Ms Hedlund adds, "Only 15 per cent of our respondents prefer to work for an international company/organization, which remains in stark contrast with other countries in the region."
