PRESS RELEASE SEPTEMBER 7, 2012

The administrative court of Vasa has decided to withdraw the permission to temporarily discharge mine water. The permission was earlier given by the Regional State Administrative Agencies on 9.5.2012 nr. 40/12/1 The court states that the regional agency made their decision with reference to the wrong paragraph in the environmental protection law.

Nordic Mines has not yet discharged any water in accordance with the permit from May 2012. Since a permanent pipe line for water discharge will be taken into use the forthcoming weeks the company makes the conclusion that no temporary discharge will be needed. Nordic Mines see no reason to appeal the decision from Vasa administrative court.

Background

In March this year the Finnish media noted that there was a risk of discharge of environmental hazardous elements from a dam construction at the Laiva mine in Raahe, since Nordic Mines had applied for discharge of excess water at a temporary discharge point. The application was prepared after a long period of heavy precipitation. The temporary discharge point was never used.
