Ukraine's Relations With EU, USA Will Get New Impetus After Elections - President Yanukovych

The upcoming elections to the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian parliament) should be held on the same level as the 2010 presidential elections, which were perceived as fair and transparent by the international community. "The government is more than anyone else interested in these elections being assessed as fair, transparent and democratic," said the president. The elections are expected to give a new start for transformed relations between Ukraine and the U.S., and renew relations of the Eastern European country with most of the EU member-states.

October 28 parliamentary elections in Ukraine will be monitored by international observers in order to ensure the democratic procedure. For instance, European Network of Election Monitoring Organizations (ENEMO) has already launched their observation campaign in Ukraine. ENEMO plans to provide 400 short-term observers. Hundreds of other international observers, including official representatives of Canada, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, United States, Finland, etc. and a number of international organizations have already announced their plans to monitor the parliamentary elections in Ukraine. This was reiterated during the New York meeting between President Yanukovych and Sauli Niinistö, the President of Finland.

It was also highlighted that Ukrainian government would see to the respective law on the parliamentary elections being strictly complied with. Notably, the new election law was approved in cooperation with the country's opposition.  The parliament ruled to equip most polling stations with web-cameras, broadcasting the signal from the stations online.

While in New York Ukrainian president commented on the recent resolution of the U.S. Senate on the situation in Ukraine, concerning the criminal cases of Ukraine's Ex-prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and Ex-minister of Interior Yuriy Lutsenko. The president pointed out that this and any other respective resolution of American Senate should be reckoned with. "…We shouldn't opine on the American senate. It is up to American people to do it," he concluded.
