Edinburgh, 17th March 2014 .- The Edinburgh City Council has officially announced that has elected GOWEX (GOW-MAB, ALGOW-NYSE Alternext, LGWXY-OTC Market), a market leader in creating Wireless Smart Cities, to develop and exploit its Wi-Fi city network. The Edinburgh WiFi network will be spread over the centre of the Scottish capital and a total of 13 suburban areas , which will allow the half a million residents, and as well as the 7 million tourists visiting the city, to have free and open access to the Internet via WiFi.

GOWEX has signed a 10-year contract for the commercial exploitation of the network from the city council and they will work together to incorporate new access points and partners with the aim of increasing the quality and service coverage.

GOWEX is firmly committed to the British Islands and Ireland: our proposal is that Edinburgh and Dublin are the first two cities of many cities in these islands. Working with big capitals like Edinburgh is a source of pride for GOWEX and it enables us to increasingly obtain greater visibility throughout the world. This summer, millions of visitors will enjoy a different festival as they will be permanently connected thanks to us says Jenaro Garcia, CEO of GOWEX. Edinburgh is a success story which is part of GOWEX growth strategy at the British Isles, a place where the company is firmly committed to develop.

Edinburgh Wi-Fi: city's new incentive

Thanks to a study conducted by the Edinburgh City Council, the areas of greatest traffic have been identified, so they will be Wi-Fi zones and additionally, there will be created new reinforcement zones for the visitors that will arrive at the city coinciding with the Edinburgh International Festival. The 300 Smart WiFi Zones that the network will   have, will be located in famous landmarks as Princes Street, the University of Edinburgh, Portobello, the Meadows, Stockbridge and the iconic Edinburgh Castle, among many others.

Frank Ross, City Councillor said that this is a fantastic result for Edinburgh. It's a great service for city residents and adds clout to the visitor experience. As a Council, we're proud of international companies want to work with us to bring the best to the City. GOWEX commitment to our town is especially exciting . It means safe, secure and free access at all times to Wi-Fi as it is equal at New York, Paris and Barcelona.

In the first phase, which will be released before the summer, the network will be operational in the city centre in order to cover the areas of greatest traffic. Subsequently, the network will be extended to other 13 residential areas in the city's suburbs, where residents and students of the 4 Universities in Edinburgh (over 100,000 students) will enjoy access on the streets. Moreover, GOWEX has committed itself to going even further and developing a major parallel project to reach the most disadvantaged areas of the capital.

As in the other GOWEX networks, all users who are registered will have free access, not only to the Edinburgh network, also to the over 83 networks that the company has throughout the world: Dublin, New York, Paris, Barcelona, San Francisco, Madrid, etc. The freemium connection speed will be 1 MB download for universal access and up to 6 MB for those that sign-up to premium rates.
