Almost 1 million Ziggo WifiSpots to be active by late August

Ziggo begins national rollout with 65,000 Wifi Spots in The Hague

Ziggo announced today that its Internet clients in areas where the company operates are to have access to almost 1 million Ziggo WifiSpots by no later than the end of August. Following the test city of Groningen, The Hague will be the second location to go live, with approximately 65,000 Ziggo WifiSpots active by 7 May. After a one-time registration, Ziggo's Internet clients will automatically have access to all available WifiSpots.

The home experience outside the home
"For many years, Ziggo clients have been using our products in the comfort of their own homes, where they have been able to fully enjoy our service offerings. We now want to provide this as a mobile experience," said Pieter Vervoort, VP Consumer Products & Innovation at Ziggo. "We want our clients to be able to use our products outside their homes and on the move. Ziggo WifiSpots provide the technical basis that makes that possible. We are currently working on several new services that will be geared to the Ziggo WifiSpots network." Vervoort added.

Total separation between client network and hotspot

In order to be suitable as a WifiSpot modem/WiFi router, Ziggo has adapted the equipment and programmes in such a way that they meet the following requirements:

  • Total separation between the WifiSpot and the client network so that optimum security and privacy are guaranteed
  • WiFi use by clients does not affect clients' Internet performance
  • The WifiSpot must have a wide enough range to provide guest users with the necessary freedom of movement
  • The Wifi Spot can accommodate 20 guest users simultaneously
  • Once-only log-in procedure with subsequent automatic access to all Ziggo WifiSpots

Groningen test results

  • Prior to the rollout in The Hague, Ziggo tested the hot spots' function and the use of the Ziggo Wifi Spots in the city of Groningen. This test showed that function and usage met the requirements. Furthermore almost all clients found this to be an excellent alternative to 3G. Less than 1% of the clients turned off the hotspot function and did not wish to participate.
